IV chronicles - {38 weeks}

Well, if Rosalia Belle doesn't make appearance by tomorrow at noon, this will officially be the longest I have ever been pregnant.

But...

The end is in sight. My doctor did say that if I was still pregnant at 39 weeks, he would admit me and get this "show" on the road. I'm not sure how I feel about that, just because I really didn't want to be induced. But if it's a means to an end of many nights of false labor, I'm there!

I'm still walking around at 4 cm dilated, 60% effaced (as of my appointment earlier this week). Lots and lots of aches and pains and pressure. Not surprising. Still didn't stop me from going for a four and a half mile walk earlier this week.

How do I put this lightly? If le husband asks me one more time if I'm having contractions or if it's time or if I could just go into labor already, I'm going to very politely punch him in the face. (I love you, honey.)

I'm currently down to about 3 shirts and a couple pairs of stretch pants that still comfortably fit. I find myself fantasizing about fitting into regular clothes again. That and being able to carry Remy up the stairs without hyperventilating.

I can't wait to hold this sweet little lump of sugar in my arms. Soon y'all..SOON!

IV Chronicles - {37 weeks}

This post has been brought to you by one giant red bouncy ball, three jars of dill pickle spears, and an entire week of waking up at least five times a night.

Obviously blogging has sort of taken a back seat to life this week and probably will continue to do so until this little one is here. Heck, who am I kidding..blogging has taken a back seat to eating and napping. Both things I have been doing a tremendous amount of this week.

So I am officially full term and walking around at 4cm dilated. People tend to get a little bug-eyed when they hear that. As if me sneezing will cause the baby to suddenly drop to the floor. But alas, this is completely the norm for my pregnancies and really does not indicate when labor will start.

Even though I should probably be getting really impatient and irritated and ready to get this whole thing over with, I okay am surprisingly okay with being pregnant for a couple more weeks. Or at least until le husband and I get at least one or two date nights in. We haven't had one in six months or so? Yikes!

37 week belly..

See y'all next week? Maybe?

July 05, 2012

Hot. Hot. Hot.

Blah, blah, blah, pregnancy, wahhhh, blah, blah.

I think from here until this baby makes an appearance this blog is going to become one whiny, hormonal rant. At least I warned you?

....

It was the fourth of July and it was hot.

We played with sparklers. Well, the kids and le husband played with sparklers and I sat comfortably in an adirondack chair and took pictures.

....

Once again, the kiddie pool has been the best $25 we've spent all summer.

....

Remy cut three molars in the past week.
THREE.

Pray for us.

....

Since the beginning of this pregnancy, I've been betting that I'm going to deliver at 39 weeks. Mostly because my previous children have been born at 36, 37, and 38 weeks gestation and I kind of have a nice pattern going.
But I think I may be wrong. The signs of impending labor are showing up. The same way they did before I had Owen (who was born at 36 weeks on the dot).

But Rosie dear needs to stay put for at least another 12 days. Why 12 days? That's when my mom gets here to help us out for a few weeks.

Stay put Rosie!

Only 5 more days to vote!

IV Chronicles {34 weeks-ish}

As I tried to type the first sentence of this post, my husband threw a Nerf ball at me from across the room.

Boys...

I teeter back and forth between feeling like this pregnancy has flown by to feeling as if it's never going to end. I will never again underestimate how difficult it is to be pregnant when you have a toddler running around. A very spirited toddler at that. Add summer heat and a house with too many stairs and NO central AC and you get a very cranky lady.

But other than the normal aches and pains? This pregnancy has been abnormally good to me. With Remy, I suffered through months of terrible rib and back pain. I've yet to experience any with this pregnancy. Baby Rosie is measuring large (5lbs5oz at 33 weeks!) according to ultrasound, but I'm not convinced that she will be a terribly large baby.

As for preparations, poor Rosie is getting the fourth baby treatment. I've washed a couple batches of laundry and talked about getting her port-a-crib set up.

That's it. Yikes.

Oh and I've had multiple discussions with le husband about my "birth plan." The term birth plan being loosely used. So what's the plan?

I want to avoid an induction if at all possible. (Though if I'm still pregnant in 5-6 weeks, all bets may be off.)

I want to labor at home for as long as possible. (Or until I sufficiently scare the children.)

I don't want any pain relief. (Seriously. I birthed Remy without any pain relief. It was simultaneously the best and worst experience of my life.)

And no one is allowed to count loudly as I'm pushing or they risk getting kicked in the face.
(I'm kidding. Sort of. Maybe.)

....

That's it for now.

IV Chronicles&Happy Things {Quick Edition}

26 weeks.

So, it's pretty official.

I am so uncomfortable.

Pukey, out of breath, feeling as if I can fall asleep at the drop of a hat. Name it and I have it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still relishing every second of this pregnancy. But I'm just huffing and puffing as I'm relishing.

....

Happy Things.

Star Wars Day. May the Fourth be with you.

Owen's Arrival {Part 1}

December 11, 2003. 6:30PM.

I was standing over the stove, carefully watching hamburger steaks sizzle on our flimsy grill pan. In between contractions, I'd peel the potatoes that would become a huge pile of mash. Dinner seemed to be taking my mind away from the tightness in my belly, distracting me from what could or could not be about to happen. I didn't own a watch, so I had teetered clumsily on one of the 1978 looking orange upholstered chairs that made up my breakfast table set, grabbing the clock with the second hand perched high on the wall to properly time the steady coming pain.

The night before had been a doozy. Contractions kept me up until 4AM, when they magically ceased, causing me the curse my body and maybe even slightly the baby that was calling it home. Le husband le boyfriend was off running the streets with his best friend, doing whatever it was that they did after work.

I loved le boyfriend, but we were both still in our immature, barely post teen "No one's going to tell me what to do!" phase. We were young. And stupid. And stubborn. Which made for an interesting and sometimes (a lot of the time) argumentative household.

"Mom, I think I'm having contractions," I cautiously said into the phone, scared that even mentioning them might make them disappear. "And if I'm counting them correctly (which I wasn't) I think they're about 3 minutes apart."

Le boyfriend finally strolled in the door. I cradled the phone in between my shoulder and face, put my hand over the receiver and informed him that I think MAYBE we could be having a baby tonight but not to hold his breath.

"Jess, listen to me," my mom urged through the phone, "finish cooking, eat a little bit, take a warm bath and wash your hair, just in case. If the contractions continue through all of that, then call the doctor."

As soon as I hung up the phone, I was doubled over in pain.

"Dinner's on the stove! I'm getting in the tub. Eat, because I'm not sure if you'll have time to later," I shouted, not so nicely, at le boyfriend as I gingerly made my way to the bathroom, clutching a small piece of paper, a pen, and the wall clock.

Every 2-3 minutes.

They were getting stronger. But at only 35 weeks and 6 days, I was doubting that this could really be it. Just days before, the doctor discovered that I was nearly four centimeters dilated. He didn't think I would make it to January 9th, my due date. I shouldn't be so surprised that this was happening, but I was a first time mom! Wasn't I supposed to go days, even weeks past that date?

After getting out the tub and quickly dressing, I silently checked through the hospital bag that I had packed weeks before. I grabbed the little blue layette that I planned on bringing my baby boy home from the hospital in, laid it neatly on the bed and ran my hand over it. Pretty soon, there's going to be a little person filling out these clothes. Our Owen will no longer be a far off idea.

"So what are we doing?", le boyfriend suddenly appeared, interruping my moment of silently freaking out. I quickly tucked the blue-trimmed gown back into my bag.

"I think I'll call the doctor and then we should probably head into the hospital. Please don't call and tell anyone yet. I don't want everyone to get all excited over a false alarm."

He agreed and listened quietly while I relayed the past few hours to my OB.

"He said to head in," I said wide-eyed.

Holy shit. This is really, really happening.

IV Chronicles - {24 weeks}

Well, well, well...another week has come and gone! I'm actually feeling pretty dang great..sleeping like a baby..eating more than my husband..can't complain about too much. I did momentarily freak out when I looked at a calendar and realized that if the rest of this pregnancy goes as quickly as the first half, baby will be here in what seems like no time!

24 week bumpage..

....

I actually had someone ask if I derived baby IV's name from the Twilight series. As in the sparkly, broody vampires. Take that in for a second.

The answer the question is NO.

Rosalia is actually a family name, as it was John's maternal grandmother's name. Though she was from Austria and the pronunciation was a bit different. After deciding on Rosalia, we realized that it had the same amount of syllables as Olivia. So, in trying to keep their names sort of similar, we decided to go with a single syllable middle name, just like Olivia's middle name. After le husband shot down my favorites (Jane, Mae, June) the name Belle was thrown out there and it just seems to fit perfectly.

And since it was also asked what all the kids' names are..

Owen Marshall

Olivia Shea

Remy Allen

Rosalia Belle

....

Sorry for the super sporadic posting this week. It's always something, eh? Last week it was a sick dog..this week we've had internet connection troubles. I've had a couple days where I had no internet in the evenings. Add that to the fact that we live in an area where AT&T has yet to introduce 3G and well..no blogging it is.

Hope y'all have a swell weekend!

IV Chronicles - {23 weeks}

Earlier this evening, after le husband returned from his work trip, I caught him taking a second glance at my belly as I walked by him.

He said something to the effect of..."you look really pregnant."

Apparently my belly grew an enormous amount in four days.

Nothing really new to report. Just a blazing amount of heartburn and a couple meltdowns over my clothes no longer fitting.

....

I'm quickly learning the way to my daughter's heart is through anything pink and sparkly. She's currently having a love affair with a new pair of shoes.

....

TGIF.

Hopelessly in love. {It's a...}

Meet baby IV..

HER name is Rosalia Belle.

Pronounced  ro-zah-LEE-ah.

Or as pronounced in this song.

(Yes, I've been humming the above tune all afternoon.)

She's absolute perfection. From her adorable face to her dainty little toes.

I am practically on the verge of tears with excitement. The older kids are over the moon. Remy is absolutely clueless. And le husband plans on stockpiling guns to ward off his daughters' potential suitors.

....

Oh sweet Rosie girl, we are already completely, hopelessly in love with you. <3

IV Chronicles - 20 weeks..say what?!

We have reached the halfway point. Actually, if my prior pregnancies are any indication, I'm over halfway. (I've never made it past 38 weeks gestation.)

People are starting to notice that I'm pregnant. From acquaintances at the kids' schools to strangers in the grocery store, glancing at my belly and then visibly counting the number of children around my cart.

I can't help but giggle when that happens.

So what's new this week? Nada.

Just more pregnant. Boring, I know. But it is what it is.

So here's my belly photo for the week..

Psssttt...we find out what we're having this coming Thursday! Which means this will be the longest, slowest week ever.

Embrace the Camera & IV Chronicles

Whoa guys! These past couple weeks have been flying by. I'm nineteen weeks tomorrow! NINETEEN! Where the heck did that come from?

Newest symptoms?

Very easily getting out of breath. And feeling HUGE. Baby IV seems to be growing bigger and stronger by the day. Just this morning, I was able to feel movement from the outside. Such a cool way to kick off my Thursday.

Things I've been craving this week: lemon water, avocados, smoothies, and of course Mexican food.

....

I'm glad that I never announced our chosen names because we ended up changing our baby girl's name. It sort of came out of left field the other day, but I'm so so so so so excited about the names we've picked now.

Only 14 days until the big ultrasound!

Linking up with Em again this week and embracing the camera with my Remy and the bump. Can you excuse the sad state of my patio? Although it's starting to feel like spring, it's entirely too early for any planting. I can't wait to start sprucing up the exterior of the house! A few more weeks perhaps!

March 05, 2012

Ouch.

Let me take a moment and be a stereotypical whiny pregnant woman.

I know that the all knowing "they" say that due to muscle memory, you will begin to show sooner with subsequent pregnancies.

But y'all.

Y'all...

I lost count of how many times this weekend that I accused le husband of impregnating me with the Jolly Green Giant.

I don't remember feeling this rotund until waaaaaaayyy later in my first three pregnancies. And I know it's not all in my head! I spent half of last night, dramatically sighing, trying to find a comfortable position, all while seriously considering just running to Wal-Mart at 3AM for fluffy pillows to help prop myself up.

And the round ligament pain? Oy. No joke.

....

I'll be back later today with an actual post! Stay tuned!

February 22, 2012

Duh.

Last night, as I was lounging on the couch eating cookies and watching Glee (I have a really tough life y'all.) I mentioned to le husband that my belly felt weird.

He gave me a look of "Wow. You are incredibly dense."

"It may be that there's something growing in there. Don't cha think?"

Yeah, oops. My name is Jessica and I often forget that I am, indeed, nearly 16 weeks pregnant.

When I was pregnant with my first, I swear I spent the entire nine months obsessing over every single little symptom and what if. And here I am now, a hop, skip and jump away from half way through my fourth pregnancy, and I have to remind myself that lifting that 46 pound box might not be such a great idea.

Also, today marks the first day of Lent and I have chosen to refrain from swearing for 40 days. Wish me luck.

Happy Wednesday..I'm waiting on the pest control man. What are y'all up to today?

IV Chronicles - Week 14

First off, I apologize for the lack of belly photo this week. Honestly, I just look like a total scrub right now.

There's a negative windchill outside and it's been snowing all day and I'm wearing the most comfortable/ugliest pair of jeans I own along with an old long sleeved Transformers tee with paint stains all over it. My hair is slightly greasy, I'm 97% sure I smell like household cleaner and I'm stuffing my face full of the chocolate chip cookies I baked earlier this evening.

So negative on the pictures.

But..

Today was a day that I knew was coming. And as this pregnancy has progressed, I've wondered when it would happen.

I had to bust out the old handy using a hair elastic to hold my pants together trick.

All the moms out there are nodding with recognition of how wonderful of a trick this is.

....

I've been on a cleaning frenzy and I know that it's nesting starting to rear it's ridiculous head. I'm one of those "lucky" folks that starts experiencing nesting really, really early. On a whim, le husband and I decided to go ahead and switch out Olivia and Remy's rooms over the weekend in preparation for the newest arrival. Her room was the bigger of the rooms with multiple closets, is the closest to ours, and since we've decided that the younger two children will share a room for the first few years regardless of what baby IV's sex is, it was a perfect fit. And now Olivia is directly across the hall from Owen which makes her super happy.

All this moving and switching of the rooms means we now have lots and lots to paint upstairs.

Yay. (feigns enthusiasm)

....

So it looks like baby IV's name has been nailed down. Well, first name that is. It was rather easy, especially since, whether boy or girl, it will be given the same name. Nope, not telling yet. :-)

On to middle names!

....

As for how I'm feeling, the only word that comes to mind is great.

Sure, I fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow at night, I all of a sudden can't stand the taste of coffee (who am I?!) and find myself tearing up at diaper commercials, but I feel GREAT.

IV Chronicles - Week 12

-I totally skipped week 11. There wasn't much to write home about. The all day sickness has quieted. I haven't outgrown any pants yet. No little baby kicks to speak of yet.

-I lost count of how many times my mom, during her visit, asked "You're eating again?"

-My appetite is rivaling le husband's with no signs of slowing down. But at least the cravings for triple stacker cheeseburgers and tacos have been replaced by cravings for strawberries and avocados.

-I am 89% sure that this baby will be a girl. For the sake of logistics and le husband's ego, I hope I'm wrong. He's the only person on team boy as we speak. Though he has insisted that every single one of our children was going to be of the male persuasion. Never mind that we had 11 ultrasounds during my pregnancy for Olivia, every single one showing girl parts, le husband was still in denial.

-I busted out my old trusty, favorite maternity tank and yoga pants for today's belly photo. I threw out the vast majority of my maternity clothes after Remy's birth. So this along with one other identical blue tank is the extent of my maternity wardrobe.

....

Today started out beautifully. For a January in Pennsylvania. Thirty-two degrees and sunny! So beautiful that I kicked the kids outdoors for a while.

And then tonight, I looked out my backdoor to see blizzard conditions. That mother nature, what a tease.

....

Our upper cabinets started going back up tonight. Only 15,985 steps to go until my kitchen is finished!

IV Chronicles - {Week 10}

{10w3d}

I'm 97% sure this will be my last pregnancy.

That other 3 percent? Well, we're still young, fertile, and ya know sometimes accidents happen.

But really, I think this may be it for us. Being pregnant is nonsense. And it doesn't get any easier with subsequent pregnancies. Chasing a one year old and helping an eight year old with his homework and being your five year old's own personal short order cook doesn't make gestating a human any easier.

I remember back when I was expecting Owen, I'd clock out at my waitressing job, drive back to our tiny apartment, just collapse onto the sofa and become one with my TV. I thought I was so exhausted.

That girl didn't know the definition of exhaustion.

Well this girl here knows that definition.

But let me tell you...don't mistake my exhaustion for regret. I am thankful for every day that I have with my littles. And even though this new creation is really kicking my butt, I am so grateful. For every single moment that I feel I'm going to lose my dinner all over the side of le husband's truck, I am reminded that my baby is growing bigger and stronger.

So I'm starting the weekly IV Chronicles.
It'll mostly be whining I'm sure. Followed by more whining. Some belly pictures thrown in.
And more hormonal raging about food.

Relief

If you've ever been pregnant, you know the absolute relief to see that little blinking heart for the first time on the black and white ultrasound screen.

...

I know I sort of played it down, but the last few days have been agonizing.

When the ER doctor did my ultrasound Christmas day, she couldn't see anything other than a gestational sac. It didn't matter that she told me that the equipment she was using was sub par at best and that everything was "probably okay." To walk out of the hospital not knowing was torturous.

I walked into my appointment this morning telling myself to expect the worst.

And what we saw was an eight week, two day baby with a strong, thumping heartbeat.

Right on track.

My heart nearly jumped out of my chest with joy.

On Appropriateness

We need to have a little chat.

A chat about appropriateness.

Do you feel like I'm talking at you yet? Good. Cause I am.

If you want the cliff's notes, just read the following sentence and call it a day, okay?

My uterus is my business and it doesn't really want your opinions.

....

Let that sink in for a second.

So when you find out someone is very happily expecting AGAIN, here are a couple examples of appropriate responses..

"Congratulations!"

"You are so blessed!"

"I'm so happy for you!"

The following are examples of statements that are considered inappropriate..

"WHY?!"

"But what about your other children?"

"You'd think y'all would know what causes that?"

"What kind of birth control were you using?"

"You know there's a quick surgical procedure that can prevent that."

Are you serious?! Well knock me up and call me Mrs. Duggar!

....

But in all seriousness, don't be that person.

....

If it wasn't already obvious, today was sort of trying. But then the internet Gods smiled upon me and put this video in my path. And all was well.

(Brief synopsis: So this is what happens when you tell your two gay dads they're going to be grandpas.)

...

It's almost the weekend!

Letters to Them

Dear Owen, Livi, and Remy,

So things are about to change a lot around here. Logistically, more than anything. New car van (oy.), eventual new room arrangements, etc..

Some things will never change though. Like the hugs and kisses and how much we love each of you.

To be honest, I was a tiny bit nervous about telling y'all about your new little sibling. I've heard the horror stories. The older children that are immediately resentful. The tears. The feeling of being replaced.

My fears were completely unfounded.

The sweet look of joy on your faces made me forget why I was even nervous in the first place. (Except for you, Remy. You haven't a clue.)

I was completely blown away by the immediate excitement and acceptance you displayed. Not every little boy and girl would so completely in love with the idea of a new baby. But I should have known. Remember the day we brought Remy home? Neither of you could leave him alone.

So thank you for making my job easier, babies. And I apologize in advance for the numerous toys and personal effects your new sibling is going to destroy.

I love y'all and I can't wait to begin this journey of becoming a family of six.

Love,
Mom

Want to Hear God Laugh?

You know the old saying.

Wanna hear God laugh, tell him your plans.

Like the time eight years ago when I was ecstatic about the scholarship I had earned to UL-Lafayette. I was counting down the days until I could move into my dorm and start college life. And BOOM. Two little lines steered my life in a completely different direction.

Similar to the time, after two years of balancing college and motherhood and getting married, I had finally completed my prerequisites to start applying for the clinical portion of nursing school. BOOM. Two little lines changed that too.

But I wouldn't change these turn of events for any amount of money, prestige, or letters behind my name.

So I shouldn't have been surprised that just a month after le husband and I, on the long drive home from Louisiana, came to the decision that maybe we shouldn't have any more kids...BOOM. Two little lines.

Ready or not, here comes baby #4!
