Is it too late to talk about resolutions?

Yes, I do realize that it's already January 8th and that for most folks, they've already given up on their resolutions for the new year.

But..

Procrastination is my middle name. So..

1. Start everyday with prayer. Check! I've been doing this for a few weeks already. Upon waking, tripping over my feet going down the stairs, and turning on the coffee pot, I grab my prayer book and go through the Morning Offering.

"O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day
for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart,
in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world,
for the salvation of souls, the reparation for sins, the reunion of all Christians,
and in particular for the intentions of the Holy Father this month. Amen."

and then I close with..

God be in my head, and in my understanding;
God be in my eyes, and in my looking;
God be in my mouth, and in my speaking;
God be in my heart, and in my thinking;
God be at my end, and at my departing.

2. Pay off all debts and medical bills except for the car and house. We will be able to check this one off in late February! (happy dance!)

3. Cut my hair. I know this a silly thing to put on a resolutions list, but hear me out. My hair grows really fast. I chopped it all off back in March of 2011.

And I've been letting it grow ever since. I'm really not sure why, because I actually prefer short hair on myself. So after almost two years of growing it out, I've found myself becoming attached to my hair. That's why I want to cut it. It's just hair. Not something that deserves such attachment issues. Annnnd I'm deep in the throws of postpartum hair loss. It's the worst I've ever experienced after any pregnancy. My once thick hair is now very thin and just...not cute. So yeah..chopping the hairs. Soon!

4. Take saving money a little a lot more seriously. Starting with..my phone contract is up in March, and I'm very seriously considering doing away with my iphone and going strictly with a prepaid dinosaur of a phone. I feel like I spend waaaay too much time (and money!) attached to social media and ridding myself of my own personal Narnia might help curb that addiction and save some dough. We'll see if I can pry the smart phone out of my hands come March.

5. Continue with last year's resolution. Maybe we'll actually finish the kitchen this year. Maybe. Probably not.

6. Monthly confessions.

And finally..

7. Stop keeping score. This is really important to me. I used to think that marriage was a lot of give and a lot of take. I was wrong. It should just be a lot of give. Instead of just doing something kind for le husband out of love for him, I would often ask myself (very snottily), "well, what has he done for me lately?"

That kind of attitude is stupid. Really, really stupid and really, really, selfish. And doesn't serve any purpose other than to make myself miserable and bitter. So this year, I'm just going to love. I'm going to serve out of love, not entitlement. Make sense?

  1. Great list!
    I am with you on so many of these. I've been growing my hair out with the intention of donating it for about a year now. I HATE long hair on myself and can't wait to go short again! Short hair looks awesome on you too!
    I also have a love/hate relationship with my phone. Until this fall, I had an archaic Blackberry and while I was the butt of a lot of jokes, I really was not attached to the thing. Now that I've upgraded....well it's much more difficult to pull myself away. I hate that. One of my goals this year is to work on my self-control :)

    1. I was the last of my entire social circle to get an iphone or a smartphone for that matter. I'm at the point now that I wish I had never gotten one. I'm sorely addicted to instagram. Ugh!

  2. Keeping score: hard to unlearn, but so freeing when you do! I am not perfect at it by any means, but it's just so freeing not carrying around that resentment. Cheers to the new year!

  3. 1. Good. Very good. I need to make sure I do some sort of silent or meditative prayer, not just my recited prayers.
    2. We're hoping to have school bills paid by April (cross fingers).
    3. I mentally decided to go ahead and make the chop. I haven't cut it short (think chin length bob) since Jan 2008. Since then it's been a long process of growing out and now I have hippie/princess hair.
    4.Ditto.
    6. Yes -- also I want to begin spiritual direction.
    7. I've really needed to remember this lately. a lot.

    Thanks for sharing these, Jess. Happy 2013!

    1. Go ahead girl! (finger snap) I have the whole long hair thing going now too, and it's ridiculous because it's in a ponytail 95% of the time. What the point, ya know? :)

  4. Loving your resolutions! I hadn't dared to make any myself, knowing how bad I am at them, but one of my non-resolution resolutions is to devote time each evening to prayer. I also like your idea of starting off each day with prayer, and may borrow your prayer that you posted. Thanks for the ideas! Love your blog, by the way!

  5. You and your hair are gorgeous!
    And no, I don't think you're too late for a resolutions post! I just did mine two days ago! :-)
    As far as cell phones go, my husband and I recently switched to the Walmart/ T-mobile no contract thing. I had an iPhone that was lost thanks to one of my kiddos using the iPod part of it at the park... And leaving it there. For about a year, I had one of those archaic flip phones, but then my husband signed me up for the afore-mentioned and got me a Samsung Galaxy II that is just as good -- no really! -- as the iPhone. Unlimited talk, text and data for $40 a month isn't bad.
    #7 is great. I should add it to my list, too!

    1. I'm going to have to look into the whole WalMart prepaid thing. I really want a Galaxy II so that would work! Thanks, Joy!

  6. Never too late for resolutions! Still working on my post and what I want to change about me. I love short hair on you, though you look stunning either way. After my next half, I am cutting mine.

    Stepping back from the iPhone and social media is another one. I have good days and bad days. I knew I was addicted, but since I can no longer post to FB, it is weird not getting that instant gratification of people enjoying/commenting on/liking my blog posts. I have hated going private, yet loving the realization that I need to step back from that all at the same time.

    It is crazy how God brings things into your life when you need them. I am loving your spiritual posts and have been praying for your family. Y'all make beautiful babies, so I say keep it up if the Lord is willing! I am so sad His plans for my body (and our family) had to end at three. Hense why we have 999 pets! :)

    And not keeping score. Do this in ALL relationships. It is hard. But, man, it is freeing!! You will be shocked at how good it feels to do something for someone not expecting/wanting something in return (not to sound like a saint, because Lord knows I do NOT do this all the time. I just *try* to!)

    Many blessings to you and I pray you reach your goals!

    1. Thanks Blair! I know it's going to be a LONG process to break myself of the habit of keeping score, but dang if I'm not determined to make it happen. :) As for the babies, I've decided to just be open to life and to God's will. You have the patience of a Saint to deal with all those pets! I would take triplets over animals any day, but I guess I'm just not an animal person. Oh! I want to be included in your blog going private. Do you need my email? Much love! <3

  7. I love the prayers you posted. im going to have to print those out and start saying them myself. I've been raised Catholic and Ive yet to hear those. We mainly just say the Rosary which is great, but I like the words in these. While switching to a non-social media phone may be good, I hope not because i know myself and everyone love all the kids/baby picture post! ;) Good luck on all of your resolutions. <3
